Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences - پردیس ابوریحان abu
Overview
The Department of Animal and poultry Sciences was established in 1984. Our department provides education on bachelor, master and Ph.D level, which started to accept B.Sc. students in 1984, M.Sc. students in 1999 and Ph.D. students in 2013. The mission of this department is to provide high-quality, relevant education and training for students, to develop, innovate and disseminate knowledge that contributes to sustainable animal husbandry. We provide educational programs and research to improve lives through discovery, integration, dissemination and application of science-based knowledge of animals and animal products.
The Bachelor of Science in Animal Science provides students with the knowledge and skills needed for professional careers in animal or poultry farms, feed factories, and for graduate programs in Animal Science. The bachelor degree in Animal Science with either livestock or poultry majors prepares undergraduate students for professions in livestock or poultry production and breeding. During bachelor course, students have the opportunity to specialize in livestock or poultry production and breeding through course work, directed studies and research projects.
The Master of Science in Animal Sciences provides advanced education and professional courses to support master majors in animal and poultry nutrition, genetics and breeding of livestock and poultry farms. Besides taking graduate level courses, graduate students conduct their own research and are encouraged to become involved with teaching and extension activities. There are Three fields of study in Master of Science program including:
- Animal Nutrition
To provide students with knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of animal nutrition in production and companion animals, enabling them to apply a scientific and research led approach at a practical level to improve performance, health and welfare. Master's degrees in Animal Nutrition study the dietary needs of animals, looking at the ways in which they can be kept healthy.
- Poultry Nutrition
To teach students how to raise and manage healthy chickens, turkeys, and quails for eggs or meat. Students learn to apply principles of biology and chemistry to improve productivity.
- Animal Breeding and Genetics
This major offers students the opportunity to investigate livestock populations on either quantitative or molecular level. It combines population genetics and genetic improvement of livestock to improve the efficiency of production in farm animals. This program focuses mainly on the genetic diversity and evaluation of large and small stock, with an emphasis on welfare traits and sustainable farming.
The graduate program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in animal sciences provides advanced education and technical training in preparation for careers in public and private sectors related to animal science and technology, feed science and technology, animal biotechnology, agribusiness and university-level research and education. At the Ph.D. level, admitted students can major in ruminant nutrition and poultry nutrition.
- Ruminant Nutrition
The Ruminant Nutrition program has focused on several general areas including: byproducts, animal feeding and metabolism studies and diet formulation. The Ph.D. course is designed to equip students with the high level skills and knowledge to apply recent developments in nutritional science and technology to support sustainable ruminant production systems and meet consumer demands for ruminant products.
- Poultry Nutrition
To teach students how to raise and manage healthy chickens, turkeys, and quails for eggs or meat. Students learn to apply principles of biology and chemistry to improve productivity.
Laboratory and research facilities
Our main research laboratories including: animal nutrition, genetic, microbiology, anatomy and physiology. For research activities, there are dairy cattle, sheep farm, poultry research hall, and honey bee research station.
